Renovation Elevates Iconic Thoroughbred Ford

Aug 9, 2022 | Featured News, Main News

New service bays give the dealership greater flexibility in handling more volume and everything from simple to more complex service needs.

The new service writeup area added next to the service entrance improves the flow of vehicles and customers.

Principal Doug Boe served as project manager on the Thoroughbred Ford project.

Thoroughbred Ford is one of the most storied dealerships in metro KC and the region. After opening a downtown dealership in 1984, the Porter family looked to the growing Northland as the home for their new dealership opened in 1998. Today Thoroughbred sits on Barry Road just off heavily traveled Interstate 29. The building, signage and rows of vehicles draw the eye to this iconic dealership.

Now approaching a 25-year milestone, the Porters have just completed a significant renovation and expansion. The original design was a collaborative effort by the Gensler design firm and what is now WSKF Architects as the architect of record. For the recent project WSKF Architects again served as the architect of record developing and completing conceptual work by Gensler.

The finished project is a case study in how thoughtful and rigorous design delivers on an owners’ vision for significant expansion and elevating the customer’s experience, improving service efficiency and branding.

This renovation/addition of the 42,000-square-foot dealership entailed a total of 23,636 square feet.

“Our focus was on elevating and enhancing Thoroughbred in ways that tangibly improve the customer’s experience whether they are here to buy a vehicle or for service or parts,” explains Doug Boe, the WSKF principal who served as the project manager. “Also improving operations and functionality for sales and service staff.”

The expanded showroom has more space for vehicle display as well as customer and sales staff interaction.

To improve the service experience, a new enclosed write-up area was added adjacent to the service bays entrance. “It improves the flow of vehicles and customers from when they arrive to when the service work is completed,” Doug says. The customer lounge has been expanded while also providing work counters and electronic device charging stations.
