Overland Park selected WSKF Architects to complete a Needs Assessment for the City for the proposed Fire Station 5 replacement. The initial scope of work was to provide primary space for the Fire Department with minor space for a Police substation. However, as review of needs evolved, it became apparent that a Police Department needs were greater than initially conceived. As a result of planning and discussions, the initial project transitioned into the current four-bay drive-through fire station with living quarters for 12 and a new Police Tactical Operations facility complete with special apparatus space and office space for 40 personnel in the Bomb, Canine, Dive and Tactical Response units. The combined facilities represent 23,500 gross square feet. The facility is situated on a 5-acre site near 163rd and South Antioch Road and provides parking space for approximately 95 visitors and staff. The City envisioned the final design as a co-located facility thus offering some economy of use through sharing of space. Examples of space needs for the Fire Station include offices, living quarters and apparatus bay space while the Police Unit includes administrative offices, patrol briefing, lockers and armory. However, both areas of the facility are designed under “essential facilities” criteria. The facility design was created to fit in aesthetically with the new BluHawk development.
