The new Leavenworth Animal Control Facility, which was completed in 2014, provides the community with a new and highly functional home for the full range of the city’s animal control needs. It provides space for 36 large dog kennels, 8 dog adoption kennels, 4 puppy kennels, as well as 63 cat cages providing space for adoption, quarantine and isolation cat holding. This 8,500-square-foot facility also provides space for reception, administration and animal control officers as well as veterinarian examination/intake space. To assure safe transfer of animals from pick up to sheltering, a connected drive-through sallyport is incorporated into the design. A multi-purpose/community room with attached outdoor kennels helps advance the city and animal control staff’s community outreach efforts. Other outdoor space includes dog exercise areas, which are subdivided to allow for safe use by large and small dogs. Additional outdoor space includes secure staff parking and an outdoor freezer storage unit. Design considerations include functionality, animal handling and care, hygiene and sanitary conditions, sound control and long-term durability and maintenance. For example, durable finishes incorporated into the facility include troweled epoxy coatings for all kennel areas as well as kennel support spaces like food preparation and laundry services. Mechanical systems have been zoned to effectively deliver heating and cooling as well as manage infection control. To supplement the lighting systems, daylighting tubes are being used in window-less spaces such as the animal control officer workstations, exam room, cat holding and similar internal spaces.
