Excelsior Springs Animal Shelter

Excelsior Springs’ animal control facility had grown antiquated and insufficient in its capacity. WSKF Architects collaborated with Police Department and Public Works leaders and Animal Control staff to designa larger facility that would better serve the community’s current animal control needs. A reception area and lobby in the2,195-square-foot facility provides easy access to dog and cat adoption areas. The building houses 16 dog kennels and has capacity for 32 cats. Other specially designed areas include space for animal intake, quarantine of sick animals, food and storage, a large exam/multipurpose area, and office and work space for staff. To help further the City’s goal of enhancing animal adoption efforts, a “get acquainted” room gives visitors a dedicated space to interact with animals. WSKF created a master plan that provides for expansion of the facility. The design team also worked closely with the City to accommodate the City’s desire to self-perform much of the construction work. The result is a larger, modernized and low-maintenance facility that creates a humane environment for animals and offers much-improved space for staff and visitors interested in pet adoption.
