The Ambulance District, based in this largely rural community, purchased a late 1990s-era building that once housed a Shopko retail building on the main highway serving Plattsburg. District leaders turned to WSKF Architects with their plan to convert the building to a new home for their headquarters and ambulance station. Crews from this station provide EMS service to residents across 625 square miles in a large portion of Clinton County and portions of Platte and Buchanan Counties. WSKF worked closely with District leaders and crews to define their space needs and craft design schemes for how the building could be modified. The resulting station provides four back-in apparatus bays cut into the west side of the building as well as a large board/training room, kitchen, dining, dayroom, fitness room and offices and administrative support spaces. The design also provides four bunkrooms and a separate adjacent locker room. The finished project is a prime example of how thoughtful design can repurpose an unused building shell into a thoroughly modernized and highly functional EMS station covering a sizable service area.
