Before this major field upgrade project it had been more than a decade since the Blue Devils baseball team had played a game on their home field. The baseball upgrades include a new baseball field, home and visitor dugouts, home-team locker room, warm-up area, home and visitor bullpens and batting cages. Two key project goals were to resolve field drainage and to expand the outfield depth. The field renovations addressed the drainage problems and expanded the outfield from 315 and 350 feet for left and center fields to 375 feet and 400 feet respectively. There’s also a new outfield fence and scoreboard. Other improvements include an artificial turf infield and natural turf outfield complete with warning track. New bullpens are complete with pitching mounds and protective fencing. The original wooden dugouts have been replaced with dugouts fashioned from earth-tone concrete block. They include metals roofs, composite wood bench seating and synthetic flooring. The outfield fence and dugout benches are fashioned from composite wood to give them decades-long durability. The new 3,300-square-foot home locker room provides room for 40 players, offices for coaching staff, laundry and restrooms. For fans, there are renovated bleachers that have been retro-fitted to provide elevated viewing with a seating capacity of nearly 300. There’s also a new 1,100-square-foot concession/restroom building that serves the entire sports complex. The project was completed in the spring — just in time for the Blue Devils’ home opener.
