LOCATION:

Kansas City, Mo.

SIZE:

15,000 Sq. Ft.

As part of our broader design for the Children’s Mercy Clinics on Broadway building, WSKF Architects adapted a total of 15,000 sq. ft. making up the fifth floor for staff to provide comprehensive vision and eye care. Our design team worked with Children’s Mercy staff to craft a “Pirate” theme for the entire floor. As children and families enter the waiting area, they see a wrecked pirate ship that kids can actually enter and play in. To carry on the theme, additional pirate ships and graphics adorn the patient corridor walls and examination rooms. Our team’s collaboration with staff resulted in a unique design in that the examination lanes are made up of long, narrow rooms with an LCD display located on the end wall, in line with the exam chair. Doctors sit on the right side of the patient and control the displays at an adjacent counter. Patients enter each exam room off the patient corridor while staff operates on the opposite side of the room and enter exam rooms from a common team room. A room status light system manages staff and patient flow smoothly and efficiently. There are 14 exam rooms in two pods with team rooms on either side of the central waiting room. Doctors, fellows and interns work from 14 offices located off each team room. This encourages a team treatment approach as nurses, technicians and doctors are all in the same area.
