LOCATION:
Fort Leavenworth, KS
SIZE:
200 SF
Inspired by the film “Six Triple Eight” by Tyler Perry
The 6888 Monument at Ft. Leavenworth honors the World War II 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The monument was developed, funded, designed and constructed under the guidance of Carlton Philpot (U.S. Navy, Retired) in Buffalo Soldier Commemorative Area at Fort Leavenworth. Carlton is Buffalo Soldier Monument Committee chair and project director.
Dedicated in November of 2018, the monument features the names of five hundred battalion members and a 25-inch bronze bust of its leader, Lt. Col. Charity Adams.
WSKF Architects principal John Freshnock led our work on the monument in collaboration with Nathan Mattenlee, Matt McCaffrey, and Michelle Travers. “We are pleased at having worked with Carlton and the many people who supported and gave to make this monument possible, John says. “It was inspiring to our whole design team and me to play a role in ensuring the 6888th’s contributions are honored on post at Ft. Leavenworth and known to future generations.”
WSKF Architects’ military and veteran-related projects have included work for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, multiple local memorials, the Missouri Veterans Commission, and the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs.
