On July 19, 2022, Daniel Francisco Vasquez of the North Kansas City Police Department tragically lost his life in the line of duty. What started as a memorial for Officer Vasquez evolved into a Public Safety Memorial recognizing and honoring all fallen Police and Fire officers.

WSKF led a team of local, North Kansas City–owned businesses to deliver a 360° memorial with thoughtfully symbolic design elements. The monument’s black granite wings reach outward, evoking the imagery of “embracing arms.” The stainless steel plates hover over the granite and swoop upwards as a gesture of Anjali Mudra. Recessed red, white, and blue LED lighting is symbolic of the traditional colors honoring the Fire and Police Agencies.

The India solid black granite was selected for its unique color and timeless quality, as well as its symbolic statement of strength and resilience. A bead blasted stainless steel top plate, incorporating compound curves, was used to both contrast and highlight the black granite.

The memorial was situated in a raised landscape island, allowing for 360-degree viewing. The island is connected to the main business thoroughfare via a brick paver path. Two granite monoliths at each side of the connecting walk stand as sentries to the memorial. The plaques display the names of fallen officers and excerpts from the Policeman’s and Fireman’s Prayers.
