After completing a Public Safety Needs Assessment for the City, WSKF Architects supported efforts to succesfully pass a referendum vote to fund replacement fire and police facilities. To make sure the fire station fit in with the look and feel of the surrounding residential neighborhood, WSKF designed the facility with sloped roofs, overhangs, brick and stucco. Inside, the facility features five double-deep bays for fire trucks and other apparatus, administrative offices, training space and living quarters. The station is also designed to serve as a backup emergency operations center with emergency data/phone connections, equipment and power generation. Judges awarded the project the Award of Excellence in the category of New Construction in the Kansas State Building Awards sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of Kansas.
